Klias field trip

I stil don’t seem to get to figure out how to upload pics into my blog. I am tryin n waitin at the same time for anyone to tell me solution(s)…

However, stories of my field trips continue. 2nd field trip, to Klias, Sabah. Its a peat swamp area. Brief summary of the lanscape there, the place was full of mud, with red(brown) color water with a layer of oil on the surface of it, grasses, trees similar to lowland and mangrooves and posses abundant of mosquitoes and biting insects.

Peat swamp forest is very similar to mangroove area only that it is formed when sediments build up behind mangroves as rivers drain toward the coast. Soil in peat swamp area is composed mainly of organic matters. And they are losely sedimented in the water. Water that looks shallow, at knee depth can actually sink u up to ur chest or even head if u unfortunately jump or fall into it.

Experience there was first in my life. A "five star" hut was being told to be existed there upon reachin the area. Only to find out that the "five star" was at the jungle level of evaluation. It was a hut infested with termites, roof with holes, no wall, and best of all, it covers an area of (3×5)m² and it was our living room, kitchen and bed room for about 23 people. Some of us manage to make our bed out of drier grasses near the hut. Our road was a bridge as most of ta land was mud, except when we went for sampling to catch fish at an area where bridge was not built yet.

4 liters of water(for myself) was already very heavy to be carried but it dden seem to b enough for me to survive for 3 days. Everyone include me was forced to drink d water frm the "well", which was actualy a pile of stagnant water. It tasted like soil and it looks as it was coloured by a very big bag of ‘boh’ tea  inserted into the "well". And to make things more unbelievable, we showered, washed our utensils there too. I showered with the water there too and i think it was the main cause of my super ichyness and red dots on my body, hands and legs. Mosquitoes were hvin feast on us on the first night. On second night, each of us hd 4 mosquito coil lit around us.

Sampling was ok there as the fish camouflage themselve similar to the red(brown) water. Caught few unrecorded species though. It was a very torturing 3 days(with insufficient water and the heat), but once i was out, kinda miss that place and the hardship i went through. Cant believe i made it actually.

i hv nice pics of the place and how i survived there…but…stil need someone to tell me the solution to the prob of not getting my pics uploaded into my blog.

back..frm field trip

i know quite a number of friends are wondering where have i
been and what i’ve been doing for the whole 3 months since i came bck to Sabah
after chinese new year(or i am jus assuming).

It has been a very busy semester for me, with tons of reports, organizing
activities and to entertaint friends(ehehhe). Nothin much to say as a summary
for the previous semester but hv some stories(??) to tell and pictures to show
about my field trip for my course to Tawau and Klias.

Firstly, Tawau. Specific site Tawau Hill Park.
Its a primary reserved forest, meaning that it is a thick, so-called virgin
forest and it is protected by laws. Was there from 18th April to 25th April.
The place was beautiful (or at least for me as a conservation biology student).
Began the journey at around 830am and reached there at round 930PM…yes
PM…it was a 13hrs journey. Upon reaching, had dinner, briefing and was given
tent to b slept in til 25th.

Groups were given n i chose the fish group, because no ‘large mammals’ group
offered (as for my final year project, i will b doin census on wild boar). So
for the whole 5days i was catchin fish. I joined the frog group as well at
night as it was being required by my supervisor. I caught fish in d morning and
frogs at night, for 5 days.

we were being exposed to diff ways of catchin fish, and the one i like ta most
is electroshocking. Sounds great too. Generator powers 2 electrodes and the
electrodes being dip into the water to electroshock the fish. ‘Fainted’ fish
were being obtain by dip net. Getting to close to the electrodes will get the
feel of being electroshocked yourself, which was quite painful at times.

i want to attach pics to ths blog but it says that ‘my account do not hv the required space to add more pics’…hope sum1 can tell m d solution to ths..
hv no pics on my profile..nor photo album..

The batt was dead..!!

May 14th, 2007 by topper85

One year riding my scooter, or commonly known as ‘little lamb’ among my frens in uni, and still clearly proven that i have not known much about it. Batt was losing its charge and i treated it as a small prob. Thought of hvin it fixed in few days time, but ta batt went dead ths afternoon. Consequences of it, i bared a total damage of RM150, and on top of that, i pushed my bike all the way frm my uni to the motocycle factory which was about 4(??) km away. Thanks to my fren Leo, who helped me to push the bike, i needed not to use as much energy as if i was alone, and reached to the factory in a shorter time period.

well, what can i say? got my bike fixed, loss RM150, got my whole body worked out…The experience of it, priceless.!!
